  1. It fails to reform federal land acquisition programs and adding new restrictions to how Americans are allowed to use land already under federal control.
  2. 25 percent of all Land and Water Conservation Funds have been given to states while 61 percent of the funds have been spent on federal land acquisition
  3. LWCF keeps on buying new federal lands without securing any method for maintaining the land they already own. According to a 2017 Congressional Research Service report, the maintenance backlog on federal land is up to $18.6 billion
  4. The bill creates another 1.3 million acres of wilderness in the West — half of it in Utah

In defense of mining: "Uranium and depleted uranium are critical to the U.S. military and our national security. The U.S. military uses depleted uranium in armor plating for tanks, Phalanx gun systems, armor-piercing munitions and cruise missiles, naval propulsion reactors, as well as A-10s, Harriers and other military and civilian aircraft. The U.S. Navy cannot maintain its global presence nor maintain its nuclear deterrent against countries like Russia without uranium.
In 1986, the United states produced 100% of the uranium ore used in U.S. domestic nuclear reactors.  Today in 2018, 3% is produced domestically with virtually all of the remaining fuel for domestic reactors produced in Kazakhstan, under heavy Russian influence.  The U.S. desperately needs domestic uranium given this high 97% import penetration into domestic market. The U.S. Navy is fit-to-be-tied over the prospect of being dependent on Putin for uranium. The situation is untenable.
Americas’ 98 nuclear power plants provide clean energy while generating electricity for one of every five U. S. homes and businesses. Nuclear energy has unmatched reliability in the U. S. electrical system.  In 2014, as has been the case every year for the past decade, the nuclear industry’s average capacity fact (a measure of efficiency) was an electric sector leading 91.7 percent."

v   Type in Address to Find Your Commissioner Voting District

Attention citizens in San Juan County District 3--  Rebecca Benally and Kenneth Maryboy are the only two candidates running for commissioner in this district. Both are running as Democrats in the primaries, and there is no Republican candidate. If you’re registered as a Republican the ONLY viable way you can vote is to request a democratic ballot for the primaries.  Please contact Janet Wilcox 678-2851 or respond to this e-mail Before May 4 if you’re willing to do this!  Rebecca has gone out on a limb multiple times to help us in the Bears Ears fight.  She needs our support NOW in getting reelected!

v SPEAR Meeting Tues. May 1 Monticello Court House 7 PM
Anyone who has an interest in maintaining their access to public lands is invited to attend. This includes not only ATV riders, but also jeepers, hikers, bikers, and others. Spear is an organization that not only builds and maintains trails, but fights to insure your public access rights are not denied

v Dr. Mike Kennedy, candidate for Utah senator will be in Monticello May 22, 7 PM at the Hideout.  Get your questions ready.

The Antiquities Act does not give the federal government unlimited power to lock up millions of acres of land and water, and it is time we ended this abusive practice.  This executive order will end this egregious abuse of federal power, and give that power back to the states and to the people, where it belongs.

~~ Bear Essentials ~February 11, 2018~~

v San Juan County friends: you are urgently needed tomorrow Monday, Feb. 12th at 5:30 PM for a town hall hosted by Representative John Curtis. This is your opportunity ask those hard questions you’ve been complaining about related to H.R. 4532.  Even though the monument has been reduced substantially, there are questionable items included.  Meet at the Hideout Community Center in Monticello.  5:30-7:00 PM       Car pool if possible.
Linda Patterson:I found a better map. Apparently all of Elk Ridge and the Blue Mountain are being assessed for wilderness designation. The scary part about this for ranchers is: that when they created the Dark Canyon Wilderness they eliminated grazing in that area. Here is the map link https://www.fs.usda.gov/.../FSE_DOCUMENTS/fseprd547675.pdf

Good News Bears
Dwight Lomaintewa, who lives in the Hopi village of Mishongnovi, said the 65-mile (104 kilometer) daily drive to Peabody Energy's Kayenta Mine is well worth it. A steady job means his family can stay on the reservation and his children can learn the language and traditions, the 33-year-old said.
Myron Richardson, a 42-year-old Navajo welder, said he was fortunate to get a job at the mine after being away from home for construction jobs. If the power plant and mine close, he said he'd likely have to move, and his children's cultural lessons with their grandfather would cease.”
A county commissioner’s poor job performance and conflicts of interest have spurred a group of concerned citizens in La Plata County, Colorado to launch a local recall effort. Calling itself the La Plata Liberty Coalition, the group is busy gathering recall petition signatures with the hopes of ousting Commissioner, Gwen Lachelt.
n Montana Senator Writes Resolution supporting Justice for Western Ranchers  “WHEREAS, A seventeen page whistleblowing letter, released by the federal government’s lead investigator (Special Agent Larry Wooten) in the Nevada standoff case, cited multiple cover ups within the federal agencies and a “widespread pattern of bad judgment, lack of discipline, incredible bias, unprofessionalism and misconduct, as well as likely policy, ethical and legal violations among senior and supervisory staff”
