~~BEAR ESSENTIALS: April 30, 2018~~

v   Type in Address to Find Your Commissioner Voting District

Attention citizens in San Juan County District 3--  Rebecca Benally and Kenneth Maryboy are the only two candidates running for commissioner in this district. Both are running as Democrats in the primaries, and there is no Republican candidate. If you’re registered as a Republican the ONLY viable way you can vote is to request a democratic ballot for the primaries.  Please contact Janet Wilcox 678-2851 or respond to this e-mail Before May 4 if you’re willing to do this!  Rebecca has gone out on a limb multiple times to help us in the Bears Ears fight.  She needs our support NOW in getting reelected!

v SPEAR Meeting Tues. May 1 Monticello Court House 7 PM
Anyone who has an interest in maintaining their access to public lands is invited to attend. This includes not only ATV riders, but also jeepers, hikers, bikers, and others. Spear is an organization that not only builds and maintains trails, but fights to insure your public access rights are not denied

v Dr. Mike Kennedy, candidate for Utah senator will be in Monticello May 22, 7 PM at the Hideout.  Get your questions ready.

The Antiquities Act does not give the federal government unlimited power to lock up millions of acres of land and water, and it is time we ended this abusive practice.  This executive order will end this egregious abuse of federal power, and give that power back to the states and to the people, where it belongs.

Fie on groups Using and Abusing federal $ to Suck the Life out of Rural Communities

Letter to: National Parks Service 12/ 20/ 2017

National Parks and Monuments have been the victims of poor management, and inadequate budget allocation for decades. Far too much of the DOI funding has been spent on EPA speculation, research, and over spending, on both the state and federal levels. Funds that should have been used to actually maintain existing park "environment" have instead been wasted on frivolous studies and lawsuits, involving sage grouse, turtles, birds, etc. It's time that the DOI takes back its role in managing actual land, water, its resources, and possibilities for multiple use. If wisely utilized the land, timber, and minerals could actually generate money.

Public lands and those who use them, should generate part of this financial backlog; however, a bigger question is, how much has been spent paying lawyers who make life miserable for Western states and counties? The curse of litigation provides little benefit to real people who live in the West, nor the land they live by. It only spends more and more government money, while maintenance of parks and facilities degenerate more each year. Fie on the so called green friendly groups and their grants and lawsuits, who use and abuse federal money to suck the life out of rural communities and surrounding public lands
Hopefully, you can rectify this mire of neglect, and the excess of litigation.

Layers of Land Protection Prior to Nat'l Monument Designation

Layers of land protection in the West:

Some critics seem to feel that public land in San Juan County is now doomed to oblivion since President Trump's declaration to resize Bears Ears National Monument.  Before more National Monuments were even in the picture in San Juan County, there were over a dozen existing protections already in place.  These lands were, and are amply protected by law without another layer of ineffective legislation. However, you can enact all the laws and regulations you want, but without money (remember the US is 20 Trillion dollars in debt) and man power to supervise, you're just shaking a wet noodle at the thousands of uneducated tourists who have been attracted to SE Utah because of all the publicity.

Bad News Bears
n  If you watch TV or go on-line, you’ve run into lots of propaganda via expensive ads regarding Bears Ears.  They may show a paid child actor, or a rich businessmen, claiming San Juan county and the State of Utah are public land haters. Reminds me of something I recently read: “Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!” Isaiah 5:20

~~ Bear Essentials ~ June 17, 2017 ~~

Rebecca Benally is adamantly opposed to the monument and said it's "insulting" that out-of-state tribes and special interests are politicizing Native American heritage to push a monument locals don't want. “My constituents are Utah Navajos who have historically been forgotten or bullied by both the federal government and their own tribe. Now so-called environmentalists and their corporate benefactors are adding their own chapter to this sad story, using a few members of our community who are desperate for a paycheck to advance the agenda of outside interests."

Issues Impacting San Juan County Utah
n  Thank you all who attended the White Mesa Mill hearing this week, especially those who spoke and helped publicize it.  Public comment on the White Mesa Mill will be accepted through July 31.  Mail to dwmrcpublic@utah.gov

n  For the most part all comments pro and con were civilly presented and received.  There were a few exceptions.  This article on Commonsensorship has lots of good advice on how to disagree.

n  US Withdrawal from Paris Accord Beneficial for Colorado  Congress never authorized the $3 billion Obama committed to the “Green Climate Fund,” nor the regulatory scheme he considered as strong as a treaty, nor any other part of the Paris deal. Obama never even asked. He knew Congress would not sacrifice our economy for a political agenda, especially for no environmental gain. Researchers at MIT say if every nation met its Paris commitments, global temperature increases might drop 0.2 degrees by the end of the century.”
